India: Disaster management as compulsory subject sought
Disaster management could soon be made a compulsory subject in all schools across India. "I am going to ask the Education Ministry at the Centre to incorporate the subject into the curriculum," said Vice-chancellor Ramachandran of University of Madras.
A book and a VCD on disaster management, studying the coastal areas in the state, including Chennai, Chidambaram and Cuddalore has been prepared by the Centre for Ocean and Coastal Studies of the University of Madras together with Kyoto University and will be distributed in schools to create awareness on the issue.
The educational material 'Building resilience to tsunami in the Indian Ocean' was prepared under the auspices of the United Nations - International Strategy for Disaster Reduction Secretariat (UNISDR).
