Climate talks; Scientific body of the COP16 calls for continuity
International blocks defend progress of the Nairobi Work Programe
New adaptation measures should give continuity to successful formulas of the past, agreed representatives of various international blocks during the opening session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) in the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16).
“I believe that a continuous program will be crucial in facilitating and implementing the adaptation framework that is currently being formulated under the AWG-LCA”, said Christiana Figueres Olsen, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Areas such as research, technology transfer and measurement of climate change saw progress during the discussions of the Nairobi Work Program. Nevertheless, that program will expire by the end of 2010, and new mechanisms will be needed to replace it.
This position was supported by the Alliance of Small and Island States (AOSIS) and from G77 & China, which gathers 77 developing countries as well as the Asian giant.
The SBSTA advices the parties on technical matters dealing with the implementation of actions against climate change.
