The Romanian Caritas Confederation has announced the launch of a two year programme on community based disaster risk reduction. Twenty local communities affected by disasters (especially floods) during the last years or facing a high risk of being affected in the future will participate in the programme.
Groups of local volunteers who will be trained for this purpose will start to assess hazards, vulnerabilities and resources in their own community. As a second step they will elaborate action plans in preparation for an emergency and will start to design and implement small projects to reduce the vulnerability of their community.
Caritas will invite local, regional and national stakeholders (other NGOs, public authorities) to discuss this new, community based approach and will promote the creation and development of networks between local communities, NGOs and public authorities on different levels in order to reduce disaster risks and to make life safer.
