Call for applications: 2026 International Summer School on climate change and related risks
The IRDR International Centre of Excellence on Risk Interconnectivity and Governance on Weather/Climate Extremes Impact and Public Health (IRDR ICoE-RIG-WECEIPHE) invites applications for its 2026 International Summer School on Climate Change and Related Risks. The programme will be hosted at Fudan University, Shanghai, China, from 6 to 24 July 2026.
About
The summer school programme is designed to serve as a multidisciplinary and global platform, bringing together students and young professionals from a wide range of fields, including natural sciences (with a focus on atmospheric and oceanic sciences), social sciences (such as economics), and interdisciplinary sciences (such as environmental science and public health). The primary objective is to cultivate the next generation of scientists and leaders in climate governance by immersing early-career researchers in state-of-the-art climate change research and fostering inclusive collaboration and holistic, integrative problem-solving approaches.
This annual summer school represents a key capacity-building initiative under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Monitoring, Analysis, and Prediction of Air Quality International Research Program (MAP-AQ), and the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk International (IRDR) programme.
Participants will benefit from a comprehensive curriculum featuring courses, lectures, and exchanges that provide insights into the latest research developments and scientific methodologies, empowering them to advance their professional growth in this crucial field.
This year's session will engage participants in four thematic modules:
- Climate change and urban climate effects;
- Extreme weather events and their impacts;
- Atmospheric environment and eco-health impacts; and
- AI-enabled sustainable development and climate resilience.
Applicant requirements
The summer school welcomes applications from students, postdoctoral researchers, and young scholars who have received their Ph.D. degree within the past five years in atmospheric sciences, environmental sciences, climate governance, or relevant fields. Applicants from all countries are encouraged to apply. Proficiency in English is a prerequisite for participation.
The teaching language will be English.
Tuition & fees
The summer school is tuition-free, but participants are responsible for their own transportation, health insurance, accommodation, and living expenses.
Limited scholarships are available to support local expenses.
