The OceanVisions2019 - Climate Summit "Successes in resilience, adaptation, mitigation, and sustainability" is co-organized by researchers at Georgia Tech, Stanford University, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Smithsonian Institution in coordination with the IOC-UNESCO, the Ocean Conservancy and Georgia Aquarium. The goal is to highlight ocean-based science and engineering successes in the areas of resilience, adaptation, mitigation and sustainability and promote scalable solutions across human, climate and ecological dimensions.

Monday April 1, 2019

9:30am-12:00pm: Summit Opening Ceremony at Bill Moore Student Success Center, host and moderator Dr. Emanuele Di Lorenzo, Georgia Tech

  • Opening Remarks Dr. Wayne Clough, Secretary Emeritus Smithsonian Institution, President Emeritus Georgia Tech

  • “The OceanVisions Initiative”,  Dr. Nancy Knowlton, Smithsonian Institution  

  • “The UN Ocean Decade for Science”, Dr. Monika Breuch-Moritz, IOC Vice-Officers, UNESCO, and President of Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, Germany

  • “How to Effect Change and Promote Ocean Solutions”, Janis Searles Jones, CEO of Ocean Conservancy

  • Tethys Award Ceremony and Lecture , Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Oregon State University

12:00pm-1:00pm: Lunch Break

  • Tethys Recipient has informal lunch with a few early career scientists and keynote speakers (venue to be decided, preferably on campus)

  • Food trucks will be available on lawn in the center of campus, close to venue

1:00pm-5:30pm: Summit sessions begin at Caddell Building

  • SESSION I - Adaptive Social-Ecological Systems: Coastal Climate Change

6:00pm-8:00pm: Icebreaker Reception on the rooftop gardens of the Clough Commons Building on the Georgia Tech Campus

8:00am-12:00pm: Summit Sessions at Caddell Building

  • SESSION II - Resilience of Coastal Ecosystems: Tropical Oceans and Coral Reefs

12:00pm-1:00pm: Lunch break on gardens of main campus

1:00pm-5:00pm: Summit Sessions at Caddell Building

  • SESSION III - Protecting Ocean Health: Ocean Acidification and Hypoxia

6:30pm-9:00pm: Reception at GA Aquarium and OceanVisions Startup Competition Awards

Wednesday April 3, 2019

8:00am-12:00pm: Summit Sessions at Caddell Building

  • SESSION IV - Sustainability of Ocean Resources: Marine Spatial Planning

12:00pm-1:00pm Lunch break on gardens of main campus

1:00pm-5:00pm Summit Sessions at Caddell Building

  • SESSION V - Mitigation: Scalable strategies for Blue Carbon

Thursday April 4, 2019 - Summit end (12pm)
