Dealing with disaster conference 2009

The programme theme is deliberately broad and designed to bring together a wide range of professional and academic organisations together to stimulate ideas and further development of this field. The programme is organised by the Disaster and Development Centre, Northumbria University, Glamorgan University, Disaster Management and Sustainable Development Centre, Kathmandu University, BRAC University, Bangladesh and the Government of Nepal who are also hosting the event.

Supported by multiple partnerships, there will be a particular focus on innovative and cross-sectoral dealing with disasters. The event this year takes place at the invite of the Government of Nepal. The event will include a range of key Asian case studies, together with examples from other parts of the world. Under a broadly interpreted objective to better understand resilience through local governance, the conference will address the following five themes:

- Health Security and Risk
- Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR)
- Communication, Dialogue and Networks
- Disaster Education
- Scientific and Technical Support to Local Disaster Risk Reduction

Guest speakers will include a wide range of national and international disaster management experts from professional organisations and universities including:
Gustavo Wilches-Chaux (Colombia), Yeon-Soo Park (TBC) (South Korea), Ben Wisner (USA), Allan Lavell (Costa Rica), Pios Ncube(Zimbabwe), Ainun Nishat (Bangladesh), Vishaka Hidellage (Sri Lanka), UNISDR (Geneva), Margaret Arnold (Provention Consortium/The World Bank) , Iain Bathgate (UK), Joao Ribeiro (Mozambique), Maureen Fordham (UK), Andrew Collins (UK) and Pratap Kumar Pathak (Nepal), Sushil Ghimire (Nepal)
