The theme for this year's 2018 Contest is: How does my school prepare to respond to a Tsunami warning in my community?

Coastal schools in Central America are encouraged to show how they organize and prepare for a tsunami warning, with special emphasis on their efforts to do so in a participatory and inclusive manner involving the entire community.

Registration and preparation

  • Schools interested in participating in the Contest can register until Friday, October 19, 2018
  • UNESCO sends digital teaching material on the theme of the Tsunami to the schools that have registered.

  • The teachers of the participating schools dedicate a class to work on the Tsunami theme using the educational materials received from UNESCO.
  • Each class prepares one or more drawings or murals.
  • A photograph of the drawing/mural (or of the drawings/murals) should be sent to the UNESCO Office in San José by 31 October 2018.

  • A committee made up of representatives of UNESCO, the Ministries of Education of the countries of the Central American Region, CEPREDENAC, and CECC-SICA evaluates the drawings and murals received by the educational centres.

  • Each participating school and the students of the drawing or mural will receive recognition in the form of an individualized participation diploma.
  • The best 12 drawings and murals will be recognized through a special individualized diploma. In addition, they will be published and disseminated on Social Networks and websites of UNESCO and its partners and within the framework of World Tsunami Awareness Day (5 November).
