12th International i-Rec Conference, Graduate Workshop and Student Competitions
Researchers, practitioners, artists, policymakers, and students are invited to discuss how disaster memory influences reconstruction and vulnerability reduction.
The conference aims to discuss how memories and knowledge of past disasters inform governance and policy and whether reconstruction reduces vulnerability, reproduces inequalities, or creates new risks in the context of climate change. Contributions may explore the transformation of affected places, commemorative landscapes, cultural practices, and the transmission of memories across generations and borders. Sub-themes:
- Disaster accountability, risk, and social justice
- Landscapes of commemoration and preservation
- Cultural practices, art, and storytelling in post-disaster contexts
- Disaster memory in governance and policy
- Disaster risk, climate change, and vulnerability reduction
Graduate workshop and field visit in Adana and Hatay: The visits will connect conference discussions with ongoing reconstruction through meetings and exchanges with residents, local authorities, and civil society organisations.
Keynote speakers:
- Dr. Esra Akcan, Cornell University
- Dr. Bülent Batuman, Bilkent University
Student Competition
Representations of Risk, Disasters and Recovery—Critical Landscapes, Spaces and Meanings
The competition invites spatial, artistic, or organisational projects exploring the relationships between risk, housing, landscapes, social justice, and memory. Proposals may address housing, memory sites, or landscapes and infrastructure, considering how design and planning can support recovery and vulnerability reduction.
Photo Competition
Constructing Disaster Memory through Photography
Open to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in all disciplines, the competition invites photographs exploring how disasters and the conditions that produce vulnerability are seen, remembered, and interpreted.
