The 3S Kadets Program will equip select community members with the knowledge and skills needed for community-based disaster risk management and center/family-based disaster preparedness to improve community resilience.

    Description

Kabuhayan sa Ganap na Kasarinlan Credit and Savings Cooperative (K-COOP) is a credit and savings cooperative which aims to help improve the quality of life its members through its various programs on Livelihood, Education, Security, Shelter and Safety(3S), Social Protection, Health, and Environment Resiliency & Sustainability. On DRR, K-COOP with its sister organization, KDCI, work together in developing programs to raise awareness and interventions to meet the needs of the community especially during typhoons and other calamities. Among those are the conduct of seminars and orientations on disaster preparedness, relief operations, financial assistance, and development of hazard maps of K-Coop centers. Aside from these activities, K-COOP recognizes the need to develop trainors in the communities to educate the members on disaster awareness and resilience to protect the lives and properties of their family and community during vulnerable times. Through the 3S Kadets Program, it aims to equip the 3S Kadets with the knowledge and skills that will enable personal growth and better understanding in Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Center/Family Disaster Preparedness and climate change adaptation that will help them in performing their roles and responsibilities as DRRM advocates.

The objective of the program is (1) to equip 3S Kadets with knowledge and skills that will enable personal growth and better understanding in Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Center/Family Disaster Preparedness and climate change adaptation that will help them in performing their roles and responsibilities as DRRM advocates., (2) to formulate the establishment of the center level disaster preparedness, prevention and mitigation plan (3) to empower kadets by giving capacity building, train and mobilize kadets and coordinators (4) scaling up of 3S Kadets and strengthening linkage and partnership with local government units.

Did the Sendai Framework change or contribute to changes in your activities/organization? If so, how?

The 3S Kadets programme is in line with Sendai Framework priorities for action and global targets.

This programme is also one of the good practices for ARISE, the Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies. The project addresses the ARISE commitments to raise awareness with respect to disaster risk and mobilization of private sector; exercise influence in respective spheres of expertise; and share knowledge, experience and good practices amongst the private sector.

What led you to make this commitment/initiative?

What was your position before making this Voluntary Commitment / prior to the Sendai Framework?

In recent years, some communities that K-COOP serves have been experiencing the adverse effects of severe typhoons and other calamities that hit their area, e.g., destruction of properties, involuntary displacement, loss of financial resources, disruption of their businesses, injury and illness. The project jumpstarted with the identification of 7 most vulnerable areas of K-COOP from the provinces of Rizal and Bulacan that are often affected by typhoon and severe flooding, and are situated in the East Valley fault and thus highly at risk from the “the Big One”.

This project aims to foster disaster resilience among members, their families, and the communities where we operate.
