Disaster Management (DM) is one of the core activities of the Fiji Red Cross’s highly recognisable programming. Fiji Red Cross will host the volunteer as she/he works alongside DM staff to plan effective disaster management activities. The volunteer will coordinate with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Socieites (IFRC) Regional Coordinator, based in Suva, and the ARC Pacific Disaster Management Partnership Coordinator, based in Melbourne. The volunteer will also be a regional resource for program management and may be expected to travel within the Pacific to work with Red Cross staff from other National Societies.

A major element of the work plan will be to ensure that all activities are designed and conducted ensure local sustainability beyond the time of the volunteer assignment.

Successful applicants will demonstrate:

  • Understanding and appreciation of issues surrounding people and communities affected by disasters
  • Proven experience in organisational development and enhancing institutional capacity in a disaster management and preparedness context
  • Demonstrated experience in program planning and implementation
  • At least 2 years experience in the humanitarian sector and/or the Pacific
  • Previous Red Cross experience and experience working with volunteers preferred
