Livable Pacific cities and towns: Urbanization strategies for resilience, sustainability, and inclusion
The report focuses on highlighting the challenges and opportunities of growing urban areas, and what investments and reforms can be considered to enhance resilience, sustainability, and inclusion - while also creating and protecting jobs.
The report concludes that cities can develop diagnostics to better understand their urbanization issues and opportunities through the following steps: a.
- Establish the area's urban trajectory and growth profile based on the three growth trajectories and three growth types described in Chapter 4 of this report.
- Conduct a multi-hazard risk assessment using city-level data inputs such as LiDAR or digital elevation models and geospatial information.
- Conduct urban analysis and mapping of existing urban conditions, urban housing and infrastructure needs, environmental and social aspects, urban planning and governance arrangements, and potential future growth areas.
- Identify potential investment and policy needs for urban resilience based on a developed understanding of the multihazard risk assessment, the urban analysis and mapping, and the four building blocks summarized below.
- Conduct a multi-criteria analysis and prioritize the long list of investment and policy options based on available funding opportunities, using a multi-criteria analysis appropriate for the selected urban area.
