The role of remittances in household resilience to extreme weather in the Kyrgyz Republic: Evidence from panel data

This paper examines how remittances influence household expenditure during drought and excess rainfall in the Kyrgyz Republic. Evidence from analysis of 2019–2023 household panel data suggests that remittances may help sustain household expenditure during extreme weather events.

The strongest protective effects are observed among rural and high-altitude communities, who are most reliant on climate-sensitive livelihoods. The poorest households show limited ability to use remittances to adjust their spending in periods of extreme weather.
