A way to sustainability: Perspective of resilience and adaptation to disaster

This study focuses on the conceptual and practical differences between the concepts of resilience and adaptation concerning an agricultural drought case study in southern China. This paper presents a way to apply the adaptation concept in the process of integrated risk governance and regional sustainable development.

In the case study of the agricultural drought disaster in Dingcheng County, Hunan Province, the terms of "land use" and "crop structure change", "land policy change" and "labour turnover" reveal distinctive differences between the concepts of resilience and adaptation. It is thus necessary and important for decision-makers and farmers to distinguish these concepts due to their different roles in disaster risk reduction.
