USAID disaster risk reduction programs
This information paper gives a brief description of ongoing USAID/OFDA disaster risk reduction (DRR) programmes active in fiscal year 2009, grouped according to the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) priority that the respective programme promotes. It intends to engage communities, national and local governments, international and regional organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to develop effective DRR strategies tailored to the needs of at-risk populations.
The promoted initiatives aim at: (i) saving lives; (ii) protecting livelihoods, assets, and infrastructure before, during, and after a disaster; and (iii) increasing communities' resilience to natural hazards. They address various sectors to assist in preparedness for and reduction of disasters worldwide, including agriculture and food security, health, nutrition, economic recovery and market systems, protection, shelter and settlements, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
