The Papua New Guinea national disaster risk reduction framework (2017–2030)
The Papua New Guinea National Disaster Risk Reduction Framework (2017–2030) outlines the country’s long-term strategy to reduce disaster risk and strengthen resilience. Papua New Guinea is highly exposed to natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, droughts, and cyclones, with risks intensified by climate change, population growth, and limited institutional capacity. In response, the framework aligns with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and adopts a whole-of-government and all-of-society approach to managing risk.
The overall goal is to substantially reduce disaster risk and build resilient communities by 2030, focusing on protecting lives, livelihoods, infrastructure, and ecosystems. To achieve this, the framework sets seven national targets, including reducing disaster mortality, lowering economic losses, protecting critical infrastructure, expanding early warning systems, and strengthening disaster risk strategies at all levels.
