IHO contribution to the preparation of the United Nations post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction

This circular highlights the role and importance of surveying and charting the world oceans, seas and coastal waters in the prevention and mitigation of maritime disasters, in line with the theme of this year’s World Hydrography Day “Hydrography - much more than just nautical charts.”

It summarizes the statement given by Director Gilles Bessero on behalf of the IHO at the 1st session of the Preparatory Committee to the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, which was hosted by the UN Office in Geneva on 14 and 15 July 2014. It calls for the initial input from the Directing Committee to be taken forward at the national and regional levels and invites the Chairs of the Regional Hydrographic Commissions to consider providing input through the regional platforms for disaster risk reduction.
