The State of the world’s mangroves 2024

The State of the World’s Mangroves 2024 report provides the most up-to-date global assessment of mangrove ecosystems, highlighting both significant advances in knowledge and urgent risks facing these vital coastal systems. Mangroves are shown to be among the world’s most productive ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, food security, climate mitigation, and coastal protection for millions of people worldwide. Globally, mangroves covered 147,256 km² in 2020, based on the latest Global Mangrove Watch dataset, which offers a major improvement in spatial resolution and accuracy. While overall rates of mangrove loss have slowed since 2010, the report finds that nearly half of the world’s mangrove provinces are now considered threatened, primarily due to climate change, sea-level rise, and human land-use pressures.
