Philippine climate change assessment (2024)
The Philippine Climate Change Assessment (2024) is a review and update of scientific research on climate change done in the Philippines.
The 2024 Philippine Climate Change Assessment includes the works of three working groups:
- Working Group 1: The Physical Science Basis reviewed the results of scientific work on the Philippine climate based on local and international scientific studies conducted since the publication of PhilCCA 2016. Despite the dearth of local expertise in climate science and in science in general, it is worth noting that there has been a considerable increase in climate science research since then. This is evidenced by an increase of about 220%, or a tripling in the number of scientific papers on Philippine climate that have been published since 2016. This report comes after the global Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) by Working Group 1 (Physical Science Basis) of the IPCC that was released in August 2021 (IPCC, 2021),
- Working Group 2: Impacts, Vulnerabilities, and Adaptation serves as an update to the 2017 Philippine Climate Change Assessment, providing a review of climate change impacts in the Philippines across three priority sectors: Agriculture, fisheries, and food security (Chapter 2), water resources (Chapter 3), and ecosystems and biodiversity (Chapter 4). It emphasizes the interconnectivity of human and natural systems and follows a ridge-to-reef (R2R) framework and an ecosystem-based (EBA) approach in its analysis. It also covers new areas to highlight this interconnectivity—the implications on human systems (Chapter 5) and the initiatives of state and non-state actors (Chapter 6)—and integrates discussions on various sectors affected by climate change impacts and adaptation initiatives;
- Working Group 3: Mitigation of Climate Change presents up-to-date information on the NDC progress and state and non-state initiatives and challenges to mitigation, in support of the preparation of the First Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1), which is due at the end of 2024. This report considered available data and information from published literature between 2016 and 2024.
