Nature-based solutions for beach stabilization: Opportunities for the tourism sector

This report explores nature-based solutions (NbS) for beach stabilization within the Blue Economy framework, emphasizing sustainable ocean resource use for economic growth and ecosystem health. These solutions provide opportunities to benefit the tourism sector, which is often vital to developing areas and small island developing states (SIDS). 

The report first explores the dynamics of a sandy coast, providing a baseline of physical geographical knowledge. Mainstreaming NbS in the tourism industry is then explored, looking at opportunities and challenges, and making a business case for NbS. Beach NbS interventions to mitigate erosion are then listed. Lastly, a practical guide is provided to maintain beaches with tourism sector engagement, consisting of six steps. The report concludes with five case studies on coastal NbS.
