M7.7 Myanmar earthquake joint preliminary virtual reconnaissance report (J-PVRR)
This report documents observed damage caused by the 2025 M7.7 Myanmar earthquake, which was significant in areas near the fault rupture, including in Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, and Sagaing in Myanmar, and while much more limited, in Bangkok, Thailand. The 2025 M7.7 Myanmar earthquake caused severe damage and loss of life in Myanmar, with significant damage and fatalities occurring as far away as Bangkok, Thailand, over 500 km from the end of the fault rupture.
Based on these observations, the report recommends further study and documentation of lessons from this earthquake in the following topical areas:
- Impacts of surface fault rupture on infrastructure and urban areas in Myanmar;
- Building and infrastructure performance near Nay Pyi Taw (NPW) strong motion station, which recorded the strongest motions for the event (to relate damage to earthquake demands);
- Impacts on distant soft-soil sites in Bangkok and Yangon;
- Ground motion studies, particularly related to supershear rupture and soft soil conditions;
- Power system performance in Myanmar; and
- Health system impacts due to direct damage, loss of utility services, evacuations, and patient surge.
