How to better link landslide inventory mapping with loss and damage reporting
As part of the process to strengthen national capabilities in tracking landslide losses and damages, this research presents the result of an initiative by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and its partners to encourage the development of data standards and methodological frameworks. The authors have investigated the ways in which landslide information is collected in various countries. They have done this through a dedicated literature search, expert questionnaire, and workshops in 12 representative countries.
Based on this, the researchers developed a framework for assessing the maturity of the data ecosystem for landslide mapping and another one a Framework for Landslide Loss and Damage Reporting (a minimum, nationally feasible schema with implementation matrices) that supports multi-hazard early warning, considering the limitations in landslide data collection, which is common in many countries. These frameworks will enable national actors to record hazardous events and their impacts coherently. This, in turn, will enhance the understanding of disaster impacts and support multiple data applications, including early warning, early action, and risk reduction efforts.
