GOI-UNDP Disaster Risk Management Programme 2002-2009: evaluation and review of lessons learnt
This document is an evaluation of a joint Government of India (GoI)-United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) disaster risk management programme aimed at reducing people's vulnerability to natural and man-made disasters through building community preparedness and conducted by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC). It focuses on an outcome and output analysis, reviews a broad gamut of strategies, appraises the key priority areas of Disaster Risk Management (DRM) in India, reviews progress made so far and identifies a realistic time-frame to complete the remaining activities. It also compares the GoI-UNDP DRM Programme with similar DRM programmes in Asia and the Pacific through its set a benchmark for community-based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), and clearly demonstrates that loss of lives and vulnerabilities can be significantly reduced through appropriate community-based preparedness measures.
