Analysis of vector risks in Madrid and Valencia

These assessments examined potential breeding sites for disease vectors that could pose risks to human health, particularly following extreme heat events or flooding, helping to inform local preparedness and risk reduction measures. In 2024, the Spanish Red Cross Emergency Response Unit conducted vector risk analyses in the neighbourhoods of La Punta (Valencia) and Vista Alegre (Madrid) as part of the Urban Climate Resilience Program (UCRP).

The Urban Climate Resilience Program (UCRP) is a global partnership operating in cities across ten countries to strengthen resilience to climate-related disasters through locally led action, strategic partnerships, and evidence-based approaches. Between 2023 and 2026, UCRP in Spain was led by the Spanish Red Cross in partnership with Zurich Spain and IFRC. The program worked with vulnerable communities in Madrid and Valencia to strengthen resilience to heatwaves and floods through awareness-raising, risk-informed action, local initiatives, partnerships, and knowledge generation.
