Building urban resilience in East Asia
An eye on East Asia and Pacific, n. 8:
This paper outlines the numerous actions that policy-makers in East Asia can take in the short, medium and long-term to build resilient cities-that can withstand and continue to function effectively after shocks by incorporating the risks of natural hazards and climate change.
The paper also attempts to illustrate that although many of the nations of East Asia are particularly vulnerable to natural hazards because of geography, the rapid pace of urbanisation, limited resources, climate and large numbers of poor people, there is much that can be done, based on good practice in the region and globally that can protect people and assets from the worst impacts of natural hazards.
This paper is part of the 'An eye on East Asia and Pacific' series of short, informal notes prepared by economists in the East Asia and Pacific Region of the World Bank.
