Malta has been told by UNESCO to prepare for a tsunami within 30 years and that at least one of its coastal towns should have tsunami preparations in place by the end of 2023.
Like many Mediterranean islands, Malta is susceptible to earthquakes. Simit-Tharsy, a new tsunami reduction project, is working to improve Malta's seismic monitoring capabilities and incorporate real-time data from tide gauges for better monitoring. The project will also strengthen information exchange and DRR systems between Italy, Malta, and key institutions.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
