A new report finds that flooding caused by an increasing number of intense storms is a national challenge and significant source of economic loss, social disruption and housing inequality across the U.S. The report affirms that communities face similar and escalating challenges, and that local governments are responsible for addressing these issues.
Aging and inadequate infrastructure, coupled with rapid land development, increased the amount of storm runoff to already stressed drainage systems, creating pockets of flooding in ill-equipped and vulnerable neighborhoods.
While dust from the Sahara Desert – totalling a staggering 2 to 9 trillion pounds worldwide – has been almost a biblical plague on Texas in recent weeks, new research has found that the same dust also seems to be a severe storm killer. As the dust-laden air moves, it creates a temperature inversion which in turn tends to prevent cloud and storm formation.
This research brief provides context about how the recovery process is unfolding in the Hurricane Harvey-affected region and how the area can prevent a similar situation from happening again.
This interactive publication provides tools to evaluate the environmental, socio-economic, and legal aspects of sea level rise on the Texas community using a series of story maps to explore each topic in depth.
