The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC)
Mission
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea plays a central role in disaster risk reduction (DRR) at the local level by focusing on risk assessment and preparedness in coordination with wider London and national systems. Working through the Local Resilience Forum, the borough helps identify key risks such as fires, flooding, public health emergencies, and infrastructure disruptions, contributing to a shared Community Risk Register.
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea develops emergency and business continuity plans, conducts training exercises, and ensures that essential services can continue during crises. In the event of an emergency, the council coordinates closely with emergency services and partner agencies to provide humanitarian assistance, including shelter, housing support, and social care for affected residents. It also leads recovery efforts, supporting rebuilding, mental health services, and long-term community resilience while incorporating lessons learned into future planning.
Voluntary Commitments
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
