Nigeria's Building Collapse Prevention Guild has warned that approximately 36,000 potential collapses are waiting to happen in Lagos State. With qualified construction professionals sidelined during procurement and building phases, the guild has recommended implementing a high-powered committee, urban renewal and a revision of the state's master plan.

According to Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency, 20 percent of the country's estimated 200 million people are at risk of some sort of flooding - a total of approximately 40 million people. The agency has thus decided to implement risk reduction measures and establish a federal coordinating unit to identify critical locations and take action.
