Mission
Next City is a nonprofit news organization reporting on solutions for more sustainable, accessible, inclusive and equitable cities. By spreading real stories and workable ideas from one city to the next, their journalism connects people, places and solutions that move our society toward justice and equity.
Their readers are the city-builders who share our vision for the transformation of cities. They include professionals working in urban planning, inclusive finance, architecture, transportation, housing, the arts and other sectors, alongside grassroots organizers, advocates, elected officials, and nonprofit and small business leaders. Often wearing multiple hats in their communities, these thinkers and doers rely on Next City as a trusted resource for professional learning and exploration: Their annual reader survey found that 75% rely on Next City for their jobs.
Next City publishes hundreds of stories on solutions to urban issues each year, leading ultimately to a narrative shift about what’s possible. Research has found that when news stories discuss potential answers to problems, readers leave feeling more knowledgeable and empowered to solve them. Readers are statistically more likely to act, to donate to support an organization, and to evolve their opinion. Where solutions journalism is healthy, America has more informed and engaged communities.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
