This one day event will host up to 20 young professionals and students to test their innovative, creative, scientific and technological skills to co-develop risk communication solutions to real world challenges facing local decision makers.
The Centre for Observation & Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes & Tectonics (COMET) are using images from two European Space Station Sentinel satellites to monitor every land volcano on Earth. The facility can spot changes of a few millimetres around a volcano by comparing a sequence of pictures. This is the first major attempt to use the technique for forecasting.
The virtual reality game 'Flash Flood!' helps share research on flash floods. It aims to improve the ability to forecast the type of storm events. Flash floods conditions tend to be localised and can last for as little as a few minutes. However, their small area and their short lifespan make it nearly impossible to forecast exactly where and when they might happen.
The UK government announced £15m for natural flood management initiatives. As part of the range of measures we can use to lessen or delay flood risk to property downstream, natural flood management (NFM) can reduce the height of flood waters at their peak. They can also help improve water quality.
While the UK has always experienced clusters of flooding events in certain periods, recent research shows that warmer temperatures might be making these episodes more likely and more severe.

The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
