Mission
The Green Students Initiative (GSI) is a continental youth-led institution dedicated to building Climate Resilience and Economic Safety Nets for educational institutions in Africa.
GSI's mission is to mitigate the risk of drought-induced food insecurity and economic vulnerability among youth by transitioning TVETs and Universities into self-sustaining "Green Hubs." GSI operates on the "Architecture of Zero" philosophy, ensuring zero dependency and maximum asset creation through the School Food Forest model.
GSI executes Disaster Risk Reduction through three strategic pillars:
- Nature-Based Solutions (NBS): converting idle institutional land into regenerative Food Forests that restore soil health, prevent soil erosion, and serve as buffers against extreme weather events (droughts/floods).
- Capacity Building: The National Youth Climate Senate trains young leaders in policy formulation, ensuring that youth voices are integrated into national DRR strategies and climate adaptation plans.
- Livelihood Diversification: Reducing economic vulnerability by creating green revenue streams for students, ensuring financial resilience during climate shocks.

Voluntary Commitments
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
