The Commonwealth
Mission
The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent and equal countries.
It is home to 2.7 billion people, and includes both advanced economies and developing countries. 33 of their members are small states, including many island nations.
Their member governments have agreed to shared goals like development, democracy and peace. Their values and principles are expressed in the Commonwealth Charter.
The London Declaration of 1949 marked the beginning of the modern Commonwealth, establishing its members as free and equal partners. Today any country can join the Commonwealth. The last two countries to join the Commonwealth were Gabon and Togo in 2022.
Voluntary Commitments
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
