Mission
Avoidable Deaths Lab (ADL or AD Lab) is a non-profit venture of the University of Leicester’s Avoidable Deaths Network. Launched in 2025 by Professor Nibedita S. Ray-Bennett, AD Lab was established with funding from the ESRC-UKRI (1037) SHAPE Catalyst Fund, delivered through the ARC Accelerator.
Our mission is to transform research into action by developing and commercialising evidence-based, affordable, and locally adapted lifesaving products and services. Through innovation, collaboration, and advocacy, AD Lab aims to reduce avoidable deaths in disasters and humanitarian crises while creating a sustainable cycle of research and innovation.
Mission
To avert, prevent and reduce avoidable disaster deaths.
Vision
To create a world where no one dies from the impact of natural or human-made disasters by strengthening resilient disaster and health systems, empowering vulnerable and high-risk communities, and driving evidence‑based, scalable solutions that save lives.
Motto
“Ut vitam habeant – So that they may have life.”
In alignment with the University of Leicester’s motto, we work to expand healthcare access for vulnerable populations and to strengthen the resilience of health and disaster management systems. Through consultancy, training, research, advocacy and innovative products and solutions, we aim to avert, prevent, and reduce both direct and indirect avoidable disaster deaths in low‑ and middle‑income countries (LMICs).
Research and Consultancy
- We conduct curiosity-driven research, evidence synthesis, and implementation research grounded in evidence-based approaches.
- We address a broad spectrum of issues related to avoidable deaths in disaster situations.
- We welcome research collaborations, commissioned projects, and consultancy opportunities.
Training
AD Lab offers specialised training courses designed to build knowledge and capacity in disaster risk reduction, resilience, and avoidable deaths. Our training courses combine cutting-edge research with practical tools and creative methodologies to empower practitioners, policymakers, and researchers.
Products
AD Lab offers two innovative social science products:
- Facility and Mobile Reproductive Health (RH) Kits: Two innovative Facility and Mobile RH Kits are available, developed from over 10 years of research.
- Case Station for Avoidable Deaths (CaSA): Our CaSA creates community-based social learning laboratories (Sole) to reduce disaster risk and avoidable deaths before, during, and after disasters among vulnerable populations.

Voluntary Commitments
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
