Mission
The Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for a range of duties related to disaster prevention, preparedness, and response. It prepares and revises the national policy on disaster prevention and preparedness, formulates strategies for its implementation, and ensures their follow-up once approved. The Commission also establishes, strengthens, and manages stand-by capacities in strategic areas to enable timely, effective, and appropriate responses to fast-onset and other nationally significant disasters.
In collaboration with both domestic and international information sources, the Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Agency monitors, forecasts, and issues warnings about disasters that could impact the agricultural sector and the livelihoods of the population. When disasters occur, it works with relevant stakeholders to assess their causes, magnitude, and extent, determine suitable responses, and, when necessary, officially declare the disaster.
The mission of the Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Agency is to create a pollution-free and green Addis Ababa and to facilitate development with environmental works that are researched, evaluated and monitored with the collaborative efforts of the community to ensure the right of society to live in a clean and healthy environment with sustainable development and wise use of natural resources.
Voluntary Commitments
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
