Turkey: New building code for earthquake resilience

The Building Code of Turkey has been revised. Almost 120 experts contributed to the whole document and all activities were coordinated by a permanent building code committee consisting of 15 members. The new Turkish Building Earthquake Code is a comprehensive revision of the previous one dated 2007. The new code consists of 17 chapters. Most of them are revised where there are new chapters on high-rise, seismically isolated, cold-formed steel and wooden buildings within the code. The chapters of the Building Code are as follows;

  3. General Principles for the Design and Evaluation of Buildings Under Earthquake Effect
  4. Analysis Requirements for Force-Based Design of Buildings Under Earthquake Effect
  5. Analysis Requirements for Displacement Based Design of Buildings Under Earthquake Effect
  6. Design Principles of Non-Structural Building Elements Under Earthquake Effect
  7. Special Rules for the Design of Reinforced Concrete Building (Cast-In-Situ) Structural Systems Under Earthquake Effect
  8. Special Rules for the Design of Reinforced Concrete Building (Prefabricated) Structural Systems Under Earthquake Effect
  9. Special Rules for the Design of Structural Steel Building Structural Systems Under Earthquake Effect 
  10. Special Rules for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Building Structural Systems Under Earthquake Effect
  11. Special Rules for the Design of Masonry Building Structural Systems Under Earthquake Effect
  12. Special Rules for the Design of Wooden  Building Structural Systems Under Earthquake Effect
  13. Special Rules for the Design of High-Rise Building Structural Systems Under Earthquake Effect
  14. Special Rules for the Design of Seismically Isolated Building Structural Systems Under Earthquake Effect
  15. Special Rules for Evaluating and Reinforcement Design  of Existing Building  Systems Under Earthquake Effect
  16. Special Rules for  the Design of Foundation Soil and Foundations Under Earthquake Effect
  17. Simplifıed Seısmıc Desıgn Rules For Regular Low Rıse Cast-In-Sıtu Reınforced Concrete Buıldıngs. 
Earthquake building code was published in Official Gazette on 18th of March, 2018 and will become legally effective on 1st of January, 2019. It will contribute to earthquake safe settlement and construction.
