National Disaster Resilience Competition awards 1 billion dollars to 13 US projects

On 21 January 2016 the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Rockefeller Foundation announced the winners of a US$ 1 billion National Disaster Resilience Competition, reports Acclimatise. The money will fund resilient housing and infrastructure projects in communities that were affected by major disasters between 2011 and 2013. The competition was announced in the summer of 2014 and lasted 16 months.

All project proposals had to be linked to an extreme event between 2011 and 2013 the respective community was recovering from. The Rockefeller Foundation offered applicants technical support to help them with their entries, in an effort to support wider resilience building in US communities. A proportion - about $180 million - of the total funds has been reserved for communities affected by Hurricane Sandy, which caused 160 deaths and $71.4 billion in damages.
