USA: IBHS offers recovery resources to Texas residents affected by Tuesday’s severe weather

Tampa, Fla. - The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is providing information for residents about recovering from the severe storms and tornadoes that struck the Dallas-Fort Worth area Tuesday. Specifically, IBHS offers repairing and rebuilding information to property owners affected by the devastating storms.
“Our prayers and thoughts go out to the victims during this incredibly difficult time,” said Julie Rochman, president & CEO of IBHS. “While we cannot undo the tragic events of Tuesday we can help the community change future outcomes for the better by taking steps now to repair and rebuild homes and businesses that are stronger, safer and more resistant to severe weather.”
IBHS’ Before and After Tornadoes: Resources to Prepare for and Rebuild After the Storm, offers property owners guidance drawn from several IBHS engineers and researchers with expertise in the fields of wind-related building performance for residential and commercial structures and the behavior of tornadoes and their destructive patterns to assist them as they repair and rebuild.

Testing conducted at the IBHS Research Center demonstrated that building/rebuilding to the IBHS FORTIFIED® stronger, safer construction standard is an effective method of reducing damage caused by the high frequency/low severity storms that comprise the majority of weather events including EF-0 to EF-2 tornadoes.
“Homes and commercial buildings that have been strengthened in critical areas of the structures, as detailed in IBHS’ FORTIFIED standards, can increase the likelihood that the buildings will be more resilient and at least part of the structures will remain standing to provide some shelter and protection for people in harm’s way,” Rochman said.
