UNFCCC call for input from ISC members – mapping progress in filling climate change research gaps
Under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), negotiations on research and systematic observation are considered under the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). Since 2005, scientists and policymakers have identified important gaps in climate research in their deliberations under the SBSTA. The UNFCCC has called for input from ISC Members and the wider scientific community to highlight progress made in filling these gaps.
The United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), at is sixty-second session in June 2025, requested the preparation of an ‘information note’ mapping how research gaps identified since SBSTA 22 (June 2005) under the agenda item on “Research and Systematic Observation (RSO)” are being addressed by the scientific community. The information note will be presented during the eighteenth meeting of the research dialogue in June 2026.
What information is needed?
Details of research conducted by the scientific community, including ISC Members and partners, since June 2005 that addresses the needs and gaps identified in the broad categories summarized below (please click here for the full list with subcategories):
A. Understanding climate change, related climate data and scenarios development
B. Adaptation, loss and damage and extreme events
C. Ecosystems and nature-based solutions
D. Mitigation & related technologies, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reporting
E. Cross-cutting issues
Who should contribute?
Researchers, institutions, and organisations (including Members of the International Science Council) working on climate-related research.
