UN hails Philippines for 'very good, prompt' disaster response in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities
On her recent visit to the Philippines after the devastating 17 December flash floods, the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction called for increased government funding for disaster risk reduction and cited the NGOs for being "an example of self-organizing communities working with local governments," reports the Inquirer. To local politicians, the UN official said, "Do not miss this opportunity to put into practice the knowledge, the technology and the planning that we know can help create more resilience and safer communities."
