Following the earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince two years ago, the Directorate of Civil Protection has evolved into a model among the similar organizations in the region for dealing with prevention and risk management of disasters.

"The Haitian Directorate of Civil Protection is really a success. We have developed our knowledge and structures implemented in all regions of the country, thus preparing ȧ Haitians cope with future natural hazards. We can not prevent disasters, but thanks ȧ the CPD, our compatriots will certainly be better prepared when the next strike," said Minister Mayard Paul who is in charge of development policy and control of the Directorate of Civil Protection, reports Defend Haiti.

Head of the Unit for Disaster Risk Reduction for the United Nations Development Programme for Development, Fenella Frost added: "through this successful initiative, we were able to reduce the vulnerability of life and property, better manage land and environment and substantially improve contingency planning for disasters."
