Cyclones Judy and Kevin made landfall in Vanuatu in late Februar, and while the impact was devastating, one resident says it could have been worse.

Vanuatu has seen it’s fair share of strong cyclones in recent years, and freelance journalist Florence Vanua said these systems have helped communities to prepare.

“I experienced cyclone Pam in 2015, and I can see that from these new cyclones, the people are aware, like they’re on alert, they’re prepared,” she said.

“Before the cyclones came, people were preparing their houses, so when they cyclone came, there was damage to the houses, but there was no lives lost during that time.”

While there are some impacts from the cyclones that will last for months, overall, Ms Vanua says the country looks to be in some sense of normality again.
