The ADB has approved a $6.5 million grant as additional financing for the ongoing efforts to improve water resources management in the Pyanj River Basin. The grant will help expand the scope of the current Water Resources Management to include capacity building and institutional development of the State Agency for Hydrometeorology of Tajikistan (Hydromet).

The agency said in a new report issued today that a more pro-active approach based on the principles of risk reduction is needed to build greater resilience to droughts.

India faces the worst long-term water crisis in its history as demand outstrips supply and millions of lives and livelihoods could be at risk. By 2030, water demand is projected to be double the supply, implying severe scarcity for hundreds of millions of people. The shortage will eventually shave around 6 percent off gross domestic product.
