Webinar: Avalanche and glacier research
- English
You are welcome to join a lunch talk hosted by Disaster Competence Network Austria (DCNA) adressing innovative (monitoring) strategies and developments in avalanche and glacier research for disaster preparedness. The webinar is aimed at snow scientists, emergency responders, mountain rescue volunteers, and other experts interested in the topic.
Key questions to be addressed include:
- How do climate-driven changes (e.g., rising temperatures, permafrost thaw, glacier retreat) transform avalanche and glacier hazards, and where do current models reach their limits?
- Are we facing extreme events beyond historical experience, and what does this mean for risk assessment and disaster management?
- How can research, monitoring institutions, and authorities work more effectively together to turn scientific insights into timely decisions?
- Which monitoring and early-warning approaches are most critical for detecting rapid transitions and highly complex extreme events?
Keynote speakers:
- Andrea Fischer (Institute of Interdisciplinary Mountain Research, ÖAW - Austrian Academy of Sciences)
- Jan-Thomas Fischer (Department for Natural Hazards, BFW - Austrian Research Centre for Forests)
Moderators:
- Susanna Wernhart (DCNA)
- Christian Zangerl (BOKU University)
- Barbara Schneider-Muntau (University of Innsbruck)
Agenda:
- Welcome and introduction
- Keynotes (20 minutes each)
- Q&A (30 minutes)
About the lunch talk series:
The lunch talk is jointly organized by the French Association for Natural Disaster Risk Reduction (AFPCNT), the Disaster Competence Network Austria (DCNA), the Swiss National Platform for Natural Hazards (PLANAT), and the German Committee for Disaster Preparedness (Deutsches Komitee Katastrophenvorsorge e.V.). The aim of the series is to strengthen European exchange on disaster preparedness, resilience, and best practices.
