USA: the great California ShakeOut 2008

Organizer(s) Southern California Earthquake Center United States Geological Survey California Seismic Safety Commission California Institute of Technology City of Los Angeles California Governor's Office of Emergency Services, the Art Center College
Date

At 10 a.m. on November 13, 2008, millions of people in homes, schools, businesses, government offices, and public places all over southern Californian will Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Why? An enormous earthquake is in our future, and the ShakeOut Drill is our chance to practice what to do when it happens.

Don’t miss out! Register today to be counted in the drill, get email updates, and much more.

Why is important to do a Drop, Cover, Hold On drill? Just as with anything, to act quickly you must practice, practice, practice. In a big earthquake, there may be very little time to protect yourself before strong shaking knocks you down or drops something on you. Most earthquakes have a sharp jolt a few seconds before the strong shaking, and we need to Drop, Cover, Hold On immediately when we feel the jolt. By practicing we will act quickly, rather than waiting to see if the earthquake will be large. If it is, it may be too late to protect yourself. ShakeOut. Don't FreakOut.

You should register if:

- You understand that if you act now you can greatly improve your safety and reduce earthquake losses.
- You see the ShakeOut as time for getting yourself and others prepared and to practice drop, cover, and hold on.
- You were invited to register by someone you know, and you want to participate with them.
- You are excited that so many people are working together to prepare southern California, and you want to do your part!

As a registered ShakeOut participant you will:

- Be counted in the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history!
- Be notified of ShakeOut news and updates
- Create a network of family, friends and coworkers
- Set an example that motivates others to get prepared
- Create and share your ShakeOut activities and stories

(Golden Guardian participants: You are encouraged to also register for the ShakeOut as an individual, school, or organization- so we can count everyone involved in a drill on November 13. ShakeOut has very few requirements).
