Third Lagos State summit on climate change
The theme for the workshop is “Towards an appropriate and effective Institutional Framework and capacity building for combating climate change”. This summit will be the third in the series of the highly successful and widely applauded Lagos State Climate Change Summit. The Summit has been able to make its mark not only nationally but globally. More importantly it had served to showcase the laudable and multi-various efforts and records of Lagos State as the standard bearer in Nigeria on climate change specifically and environment in general.
An appropriate institutional framework and capacity building is very important for effectively dealing with climate change. There are varieties of institutional structures and frameworks designed to cope with climate change with different degrees of effectiveness. This summit presents a forum for sharing experiences on theory, practice and results of various efforts.
Among the speakers at the First Lagos State Climate Change forum with the theme, “Reclaiming the environment: The challenges and consequences of climate change”, which took place from March 24-26,2009 are the following: Prof. Ogunlade Davidson( Sierra Leone), Prof. Tomokazu Toshiba( Tokyo Metropolitan University), Prof. Ayite-Lo Ajavon(Togo), Dr. Jacob Kumaresan( WHO, Kobe, Japan). Steve Thorne( South Africa), Dr. Jerome Weingart( USA), Prof. MCK Sridhar( India), Stephen Mutimba ( Kenya), Prof. Ernest Schrimpff ( Germany), Onno Ruhl ( World Bank), Prof. Johnson Falade( UN Habitat), Dr. Patrick Laux( Germany), Dr. Karl-Heinz Kohler( Germany), Paul Kirai( IFC, Kenya), and Dr. Pak Sum Low( Malaysia).
The Second Lagos Summit with the theme; 'Sharing best practices on mitigation and adaptation', took place from May 4-7,2010 and among the speakers are the following: Dr. Radley Horton( Columbia University, New York), Ms. Beatriz Del Val Cardenas( Mexico), Prof. Emmanuel Oladipo( IEM, Niger), Benoit Lebot( UNDP, Dakar),Prof. Macleans Geo-Jaja ( BrighamYoung University, USA),Ms. Gloria Guerra Guerrero( Mexico), Dr. Pak Sum Low( Malaysia), Joseph Gilbride (Columbia University, New York) , Dr. Jacob Kumerasan( WHO), Janthomas Hiemstra ( UNDP, Abuja).
Presentations of case studies are solicited from different parts of the world. The Lagos State Government will be responsible for the cost of flight and accommodation and there will be a token honorarium of $500-1000 for each presentation.
