International conference on regional climate - CORDEX 2013

Organizer(s) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) European Commission World Climate Research Programme
Format
In person
Date
-

The International Conference on Regional Climate - CORDEX 2013 brings together the international community of regional climate scientists to present and discuss results from WCRP regional climate studies, with a particular emphasis on the CORDEX initiative. This land-mark event will provide a forum for assessing the following key challenges:

  • Development of regional climate change projections
  • Provision of reliable and actionable regional climate information
  • Use of regional climate information in impact, adaptation and vulnerability studies
  • Dissemination of regional climate knowledge to policy-makers and a wide range of stakeholders and decision-makers

The International Conference on Regional Climate - CORDEX 2013 will be composed of two segments:

The first day will be devoted to two pre-conference events: a High Level Session presenting key findings from the IPCC Working Group I 5th Assessment Report, with the participation of the European Commissioners for Research & Innovation and for Climate Action. This will be followed by a Stakeholder Dialogue focusing on how science-based regional climate information can best serve the needs of regional decision-makers. This segment is intended to provide the global to regional socio-economic and policy context within which WCRP regional climate research operates. It provides a bridge to the conference proper.

The second segment of the conference (days 2-4) will focus on scientific presentations and discussion of key results from Phase I of the CORDEX project, encompassing results from all participating regions worldwide. A discussion on future priority research areas for the next phase of CORDEX, of other WCRP regional climate initiatives and of major funding programmes – as the EU FP7 and the future Horizon 2020 - will also take place, considering recommendations from the first segment of the conference. The conference aims to: appraise the current status of regional climate science and modeling; strengthen collaboration and synergies between the various CORDEX regional activities; and, in collaboration with other regional climate research initiatives, set out future priorities for regional climate science, with due consideration of the needs outlined in the UN Global Framework for Climate Services and potential future IPCC and other science-based assessments.
