About

The IAVCEI ECR-Net, in collaboration with the EGU Working Group on Geoethics, is hosting a joint online panel discussion on “Ethics in Volcanic Disaster Risk Management” in October 2026. This discussion will bring together experts to explore the ethical challenges and responsibilities involved in volcanic disaster risk management.

Key topics will include ethical considerations in scientific decision-making, the role of uncertainty, risk communication, and meaningful engagement with affected communities. The session will provide an opportunity for exchange across disciplines and perspectives, fostering discussion on how ethical considerations can be better integrated into volcanic risk management. Following the presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with the speakers through a moderated question-and-answer session.

The panel will feature Dr. Gerasimos Papadopoulos (Greece), Prof. Jenni Barclay (UK), Dr. Marco Bagnardi (USA), Dr. Elizabeth Rovere (Argentina), Prof. Ilan Kelman (UK), Prof. Gordon Woo (UK), and Dr. Itahiza Domínguez Cerdeña (Spain), who will come together to discuss the ethical dimensions of volcanic disaster risk management.

The session will be moderated by Kyriaki Drymoni (Germany) and will provide an opportunity for an international audience to engage with the panel through discussion and exchange.
