Registration for the new cohort opens until 31 May 2019. Upon registration, students are allowed to study the course until 30 June 2019 at their own pace. 

Course overview

Human security is an emerging paradigm in the global healthcare community that can be applied to guide local and global public health practices. It can also provide a basis to link up related themes under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through various real-life case studies and practical applications, this course will provide participants with an understanding of how the human security and health security concepts are applied in public health practices, especially under emergencies and disasters. The challenges with putting the human security concept into operation will also be explored.

Students will learn the following from the course:

  • A comprehensive overview on the concepts of human security and health security and their implications for global and local public health practices;
  • The relationship between human security and various global health infrastructure, policies and actions;
  • Dynamics of various aspects of human security and the public health needs in emergencies and disasters, including global infectious diseases. 

Course features

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental principles, components, and framework of human security;
  • Apply the human security and health security concepts in analysing various policies, agendas, and interventions relating to global health;
  • Assess the health security needs in various types of emergencies and disasters, such as WASH and health action;
  • Diagnose the underlying causes of global health threats such as emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and climate change; and
  • Appreciate the strengths and challenges of a human security approach to health.

Target audience

The target audience is individuals studying or working in health, policy, education, research, and humanitarian sectors. Students may be healthcare professionals, civil servants, policy makers, frontline disaster relief practitioners and undergraduate or postgraduate students of related disciplines.

Tuition

As part of CCOUC’s knowledge transfer endeavour, this course is offered free of charge. There is limited quota for enrolment on a first-come-first-served basis.

Course structure and delivery format

The course involves a total of 6 lessons, 4 short quizzes and one final assessment. Each lesson requires about one to three hours of study. All assessments are in the form of multiple-choice questions to be completed online with unlimited attempts. To progress through the course, students must obtain 75% or above in each short quiz. Students enrolled in the course may access all learning materials and go through all learning activities online within a maximum period of seven months. Topics covered in the course are as follows:

  • Introduction: The Concepts of Human Security
  • What is Health Security
  • Human Security and Emergencies
  • Human Health Security and Disasters
  • Global Infectious Disease
  • Practical Application and Challenges of Implementing the Human Security Approach

Course completion and certification

Students who obtain 60% or above in the final assessment will be issued a printable certificate in recognition of completing the course.
