There is widespread conversation around the impacts of climate change and climate hazards on cities. However, there is much less discussion on how climate change will impact (and is impacting) historic areas, which are markedly at risk.

new framework has been drafted to support better consideration of climate risk management for historic areas. This so-called “draft CEN Workshop Agreement” (CWA) was developed in the structure of the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN-CENELEC), and is now open for public review and comments.

The draft CWA defines an integrated approach that combines disaster risk management and climate change adaptation for historic areas. It includes:

  • characterisation of historic areas and their exposure to natural and climate change-induced hazards;
  • a set of requirements and recommendation on how historic areas can become more resilient; and
  • a step-by-step process to manage disasters, and to perform and monitor resilience-building activities.

The CWA was drafted in the context of the ARCH project, in which ICLEI Europe is a partner. ARCH welcomes feedback on the draft, which can be done by completing the comments form available here, or live during an upcoming webinar.

Time

14:30–16:30 CET (UTC+1)

ARCH will present the draft CWA for an online audience, and will open the floor for public comment. All interested persons are invited to register to join by clicking here.
