About

Working with the Disaster Risk Management Knowledge Centre (DRMKC) and the Cooperation Network of Risk, Safety and Security studies (CONRIS), Disaster and Emergency Management course at Coventry University will host a series of 7 online training seminars between September and November 2022 to provide students interested in disaster risk management with international, state of the art, evidence based knowledge about disaster risk management which should contribute to the quality of disaster risk management practices.

The training is embedded as part of the year 2 module ‘Risk’ at Coventry University. The series of seminars will reflect on current application of risk assessment and explore the possibilities for understanding the complexity of the multiple hazard risks and their interventions. Speakers from JRC, DG ECHO, and CONRIS network universities are invited to share their knowledge and experience. The use of collaborative online international learning (COIL) model aims to facilitate the teaching and learning activities and discussion between academic (teachers, students), professionals and communities. The seminar sessions will provide students the opportunity to consider a variety of disaster risk management tools and strategies, from not only European perspectives but further reaching out to global context. The initiatives of solutions to risks of modern life can be seen as part of global citizenship development for students.

To obtain further detailed knowledge about disaster risk management, we have adapted two publications from the DRMKC. Four themes are identified for the series, including mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery; each theme will be covered by means of scientific knowledge and a supporting case study. The goals are to provide understanding of disaster risk; and to identify solutions to potential risk using a student-centred approach.

The detailed programme is available in the learning corner page of the DRMKC website. We welcome students from CONRIS partner universities to participate in the seminars. Staff involved in risk management and civil protection are welcome to join. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance if they have joined at least 4 seminars. The recapped lecture notes can also be found on the DRMKC learning corner website.
